Description
There’s something undeniably delightful about the combination of sweet and savory, and the Balsamic Blackberry Bliss Grilled Cheese perfectly captures this culinary magic.
Ingredients
Scale
- For the Blackberry Balsamic Jam:
- 2 cups blackberries (fresh or frozen)
- 6 tbsp sugar
- 3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- Pinch of salt
- For the Sandwiches:
- 300g brie cheese, sliced
- 1 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
- 8 slices sourdough bread
- Butter, as needed
Instructions
- To kickstart this delicious sandwich, we need to create the blackberry balsamic jam. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the blackberries, sugar, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Heat the mixture over medium heat, allowing it to come to a gentle simmer. As the blackberries cook, they will start to break down. Use a fork or a masher to help them along, mashing them gently until they reach a jam-like consistency. This process usually takes about 7 to 10 minutes. Once the jam has thickened to your liking, remove it from heat and let it cool while you prepare the sandwiches.
- Next, we will begin crafting the sandwiches. Take 4 slices of sourdough bread and butter one side of each. For this, you can use softened butter for easy spreading. Place the buttered side down into a skillet preheated over medium heat. Once the bread is in the pan, carefully layer slices of brie cheese on top, making sure to distribute them evenly. Sprinkle the chopped fresh thyme over the brie for an extra burst of flavor. Keep an eye on the skillet, toasting until the cheese starts to melt. This usually takes about 3 to 4 minutes, but be vigilant as every stove varies!
- Now it’s time to finish building your scrumptious grilled cheese. Take the remaining 4 slices of bread and spread a generous layer of the cooled blackberry balsamic jam on the unbuttered side. Carefully place these jam-covered slices on top of the melted brie in the skillet, jam-side down. Once assembled, butter the tops of these new sandwich slices. After about 2 minutes, use a spatula to carefully flip the sandwiches over to grill the other side. Cook them until both sides are golden brown and crisp, which should take another 3 to 4 minutes. When done, transfer them to a cutting board to cool for just a moment before slicing them in half.
Notes
Ensure your brie cheese is at room temperature; this will make it melt more easily and evenly during cooking.
