Description

This dish serves as the ultimate comfort food, perfect for both cozy family dinners and those bustling weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the ziti pasta. Follow the cooking directions on the package to ensure the pasta is cooked to an al dente texture. Drain the pasta thoroughly and set it aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion becomes translucent and aromatic. This process should take about 2-3 minutes.
  3. To the skillet, add the jar of marinara sauce, water, dried basil, dried oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Stir the ingredients together and bring to a gentle simmer. Allow the sauce to cook on low heat for about 5-7 minutes to meld the flavors together.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the drained ziti pasta with ricotta cheese, and half of the shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. Ensure the cheese is evenly distributed throughout the pasta.
  5. Pour the marinara sauce mixture over the pasta and cheese in the bowl. Stir gently to mix everything uniformly. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses on top of the pasta.
  6. Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese on top is melted and golden brown. Optionally, garnish with fresh basil for a touch of fresh flavor.

Notes

Baked ziti can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator for up to two days before baking.
