Description
Cheesy, crispy, and fresh, the Crispy Cabbage Pie with Dill Cream Sauce is a must-try recipe that brings comfort and flavor to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb finely shredded cabbage (about ½ medium head)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 green onions, chopped
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- ⅔ cup all-purpose or gluten-free flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3–4 tbsp olive oil (for frying)
- Optional: ½ cup grated cheese (Cheddar or Mozzarella)
Instructions
- Start by combining the finely shredded cabbage and chopped green onions into a large mixing bowl. Ensure that the cabbage is finely shredded, as this helps the pie cook evenly and gives it a nice texture. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. This mixture will act as a binding agent, bringing together the cabbage and other ingredients. Once everything is well mixed, pour this egg mixture into the bowl with the cabbage and onions. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated, creating a cohesive mixture.
- Next, sprinkle the flour and baking powder over the cabbage and egg mixture. This step is crucial for achieving that perfectly crispy texture. Stir the mixture until the flour is fully incorporated and there are no lumps. The dough should have a slightly thick consistency but not overly dry. If you prefer a cheesier flavor, this is the perfect moment to fold in the grated cheese, allowing it to become melted and gooey throughout the pie once cooked.
- Heat about 2 tablespoons of olive oil in your preheated skillet over medium-low heat. Once hot, pour the cabbage mixture into the skillet, carefully pressing it down to form an even layer. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for about 15 minutes. This will allow the bottom to develop a lovely crispness. After 15 minutes, it’s time to flip the pie! Using a large plate or wooden board, invert the pie so that the cooked side is facing upwards. Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the skillet, then gently slide the pie back in and cook the other side uncovered for another 10-15 minutes. This will finish cooking the cabbage through and ensure both sides are golden brown and crispy.
- As the pie finishes cooking, it’s the perfect time to prepare the dill cream sauce. In a small bowl, mix together the light sour cream, mayonnaise, chopped fresh dill, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir until the sauce is smooth and emulsified. This sauce adds a refreshing tang that brightens up the rich flavors of the crispy pie.
Notes
Serve the pie warm directly from the skillet for the best texture.
