Description
A warm, gooey, and nostalgic dessert that feels like a hug on a plate.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups cubed brioche or challah bread
- 4 large eggs
- 1 ¾ cups whole milk
- ¾ cup heavy cream
- ⅔ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons butter (for the sauce)
- ½ cup heavy cream (for the sauce)
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar (for the sauce)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the sauce)
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cut the brioche or challah bread into 1-inch cubes and toast if not stale.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Place cubed bread in the baking dish and pour custard over it, pressing down to soak.
- Drizzle melted butter over the top and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
- While baking, melt remaining butter for the sauce, mix with sugar and cream until thickened, then add vanilla.
- Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving, topped with warm vanilla sauce.
Notes
Ensure that the bread is adequately dried out to absorb the custard well—this prevents a mushy texture.
