- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 to 3 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter, lining the bottom with parchment paper.
- Melt 1/4 cup unsalted butter in a saucepan, add brown sugar, stir until bubbly, and pour into the cake pan.
- Arrange thinly sliced apples over the caramel layer.
- Cream remaining butter and granulated sugar, mix in eggs and vanilla until fluffy.
- In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternate adding dry mixture and milk to the butter mixture.
- Pour the batter over the apples in the pan and bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Cool for 5-10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
Notes
Using firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp will provide the best texture. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
