  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 to 3 medium apples, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter, lining the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. Melt 1/4 cup unsalted butter in a saucepan, add brown sugar, stir until bubbly, and pour into the cake pan.
  3. Arrange thinly sliced apples over the caramel layer.
  4. Cream remaining butter and granulated sugar, mix in eggs and vanilla until fluffy.
  5. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternate adding dry mixture and milk to the butter mixture.
  6. Pour the batter over the apples in the pan and bake for 35-40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Cool for 5-10 minutes, then invert onto a serving plate.
