Description

There’s something special about Christmas Butter Cookies that captures the spirit of the holiday season perfectly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Colored sprinkles or sanding sugar for decorating

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure a consistent temperature. Line your baking sheets with parchment paper to avoid sticking and facilitate easy transfer.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine softened butter and granulated sugar. Use an electric mixer to beat the mixture on medium-high until it becomes light and fluffy. This process should take about 2–3 minutes, giving your cookies a tender texture.
  3. Crack in the egg and pour in the vanilla and almond extracts. Continue to beat the mixture until all ingredients are thoroughly combined, ensuring that the flavors meld together nicely.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing slowly until a smooth dough forms. This step is crucial to achieving the perfect cookie consistency.
  5. Roll the dough into balls roughly 1 inch in diameter and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Gently flatten each ball and sprinkle with your chosen colored sprinkles or sanding sugar, enhancing their festive look.
  6. Transfer the baking sheets to the oven and bake for 9–11 minutes, or until the cookie edges turn a light golden color. Allow them to cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before moving them to a wire rack to finish cooling.

Notes

These cookies can be frozen for later use, and they stay fresh for up to a week in an airtight container.
