Classic Dirty Rice

  • Author: Alioui
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

A comforting and flavorful Southern classic made with ground meat, vegetables, and rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef or pork
  • 2 cups cooked white rice
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 ribs celery, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
  • 4 ounces chicken livers, finely chopped (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons chopped green onions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon oil or butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. If you are not using leftover rice, start by cooking it according to package instructions. Once cooked, let it cool slightly to avoid clumping when added later.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil or butter and allow it to warm up. Next, incorporate the ground beef or pork into the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula to ensure even browning. If you’re opting to include chicken livers, mix them in at this stage and cook until fully integrated—this adds depth and richness to your dish.
  3. Once the meat is browned, push it to one side of the skillet. Add the diced bell pepper, celery, and onion to the other side, sautéing for about 5-7 minutes until they start to soften. Stir in the minced garlic for an additional minute to infuse its aroma throughout the vegetables.
  4. Sprinkle the Cajun seasoning, along with salt and pepper, over the sautéed mixture. This is where you ensure that every flavor is evenly distributed. Use your spatula to mix everything well, ensuring that the spices coat the meat and vegetables thoroughly.
  5. Next, fold in the cooked rice, stirring continuously until the mixture is well combined and heated through. This is crucial for achieving that deliciously comforting flavor that is characteristic of Classic Dirty Rice.
  6. Finally, remove the skillet from the heat and mix in the chopped green onions and parsley. These fresh herbs will brighten the dish and add a burst of color. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, then serve your delicious dirty rice hot!
