Description
There’s nothing quite like a plate of Hamburger Steaks to bring comfort to a bustling weeknight dinner or to indulge in over a relaxed weekend supper.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)
- Gravy Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Begin by gathering all the ingredients in one place. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Season the mixture with salt and pepper. Make sure to mix it well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated and the mixture is uniform.
- Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions, shaping them into patties that are roughly the same size for even cooking. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil shimmers, place the patties in the skillet. Cook them for about 5-6 minutes per side, allowing them to develop a rich brown crust while cooking through.
- Once the patties are cooked, remove them from the skillet and let them rest on a covered plate. In the same skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter. Sprinkle in the flour, whisking it together for 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown. Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid any lumps. Allow the mixture to cook and thicken over the next few minutes. Incorporate the Worcestershire sauce, season with salt and pepper, and adjust to taste.
- Return the cooked beef patties to the skillet, letting them nestle into the thick gravy. Spoon some of the luscious gravy over the patties, and let them simmer together for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through. This final step merges all the flavors beautifully, ensuring every bite is filled with deliciousness.
Notes
Ensure the skillet is hot before placing the patties to achieve a beautiful sear. If the gravy is too thick, add more beef broth a tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Resting the beef patties post-searing helps retain juices and maintain a tender texture. For an added touch of flavor, deglaze the skillet with a splash of red wine before making the gravy.
