Homemade Honey Buns

  • Author: Alioui
  • Total Time: 2 hrs 15 mins
  • Yield: Approx. 12 buns

Description

Indulge in these irresistibly delicious homemade honey buns, perfect for breakfast or a sweet snack, featuring a soft texture and a delightful honey glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Begin by dissolving the yeast in warm milk within a large bowl. Let this mixture sit for about 5 minutes. It becomes foamy and bubbly, indicating that the yeast is active and ready to work its magic.
  2. Once the yeast is activated, stir in the granulated sugar, melted butter, salt, and eggs. Gradually add the flour, stirring until a dough begins to form. Mix until cohesive and slightly sticky.
  3. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead it for 6-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Proper kneading ensures the buns will rise nicely, creating that perfect texture.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size. This rising time is pivotal for the lightness of the buns.
  5. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon to make a sugary spicy mix. Then, roll the dough into a rectangle around 1/4 inch thick. Spread the softened butter over the dough, sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar, and drizzle with honey.
  6. Roll the dough tightly from the long side, forming a neat log. Using a sharp knife, slice it into 1-inch sections. These become the buns ready for baking.
  7. Place the sliced buns into a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes or until they are beautifully golden brown.
  8. To complete these treats, mix powdered sugar with 2–3 tablespoons of milk to create a creamy glaze. Drizzle this over the warm buns, and they’re ready to serve, oozy and delicious.

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer preservation.
