Description

Start your day with a delicious, heartwarming dish that is both satisfying and versatile with this Sausage and Egg Casserole — an easy breakfast idea that will quickly become a staple in your home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound sausage (breakfast, Italian, or spicy)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups bread cubes (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ cup diced bell peppers (optional)
  • ½ cup chopped spinach (optional)
  • ¼ cup diced onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot enough for baking. While that’s heating up, take your chosen baking dish and grease it lightly. This will help the casserole come out cleanly without sticking.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, add the sausage to the pan. Using a spatula, break it into small crumbles as it cooks. This step usually takes about 5–7 minutes; you’ll know it’s done when it’s evenly browned. Once cooked, drain any excess fat and set the sausage aside to cool slightly.
  3. In a spacious mixing bowl, crack the six eggs and whisk them thoroughly until the yolks and whites are completely combined. Add in the milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika, continuing to whisk until the mixture is smooth and well incorporated.
  4. In the greased baking dish, start layering your prepared sausage evenly across the bottom. If you’re using optional vegetables, this is the time to sprinkle them on top of the sausage. Follow this layer with the shredded cheddar cheese and bread cubes (if desired). Finally, pour the egg mixture over everything. Allow the mixture to settle for a moment to ensure it penetrates and combines well.
  5. With all the layering complete, place the dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 30–40 minutes or until the center is set and a lovely golden brown crust has formed on top. To test for doneness, you can insert a knife in the middle—the knife should come out clean indicating it’s fully cooked.
  6. Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. This brief cooling period helps the casserole hold its shape when serving. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious creation!

Notes

Using day-old bread is optimal as it adds a lovely texture and reduces excess moisture. For a dairy-free version, simply substitute the milk and cheese with plant-based alternatives to make it accessibly delicious.
