Description

If you’re in search of a hearty, flavorful dish that brings warmth and comfort to your dinner table, look no further than Shrimp Dirty Rice. This bold Southern classic is a delightful medley of spiced meats, juicy shrimp, and fluffy rice—perfect for any night of the week!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage
  • 1 lb hamburger meat
  • 1012 shrimp, deveined and tails removed
  • 4 cups cooked rice
  • 1½ cups chopped onions and bell peppers
  • 2 cups chicken broth (like Better Than Bouillon)
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil (divided)
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp seafood seasoning
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp black pepper (more to taste)
  • ½ tsp salt (more to taste)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by seasoning your shrimp with the seafood seasoning to ensure they’re packed with flavor. Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the shrimp and sear them for 2–3 minutes on each side until they turn pink and opaque.
  2. In the same skillet, add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil, allowing it to warm up briefly. Next, introduce the ground pork sausage and hamburger meat to the skillet. Use a spatula to break up the meats into smaller pieces as they cook.
  3. Once the meats are browned, add the chopped onions, bell peppers, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté the vegetables for 3–4 minutes or until softened.
  4. To thicken the mixture, sprinkle the flour over the meat and vegetable mixture. Gradually pour in the chicken broth while continuing to stir until the mixture is smooth. Let it simmer for 5–7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the cooked rice and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Finally, return the cooked shrimp to the skillet and mix everything well.
  6. Once everything is well mixed and heated through, your Shrimp Dirty Rice is ready to enjoy!

Notes

Adjust the spice levels to your preference. Taste and add more pepper or cayenne if you enjoy a little kick.
