  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar (optional)
  • Green, red, or white gel food coloring
  • Assorted holiday sprinkles (red, green, silver, multicolor)
  • Gold star-shaped sprinkles or candies (for tree toppers)

Instructions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to a gentle 200°F (90°C) and prepare your baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, whip the egg whites on medium speed until soft peaks begin to form. Once you see the soft peaks, gradually add the granulated sugar, one tablespoon at a time. Increase the mixer speed to high and continue whipping until the mixture becomes stiff and glossy. Gently fold in the vanilla extract to incorporate its flavor.
  2. Once your meringue is ready, divide it into separate bowls based on how many colors you’d like to use. Gently fold the gel food coloring into the meringue until the desired color is achieved.
  3. Prepare your piping bags with a star tip attachment and pipe upward swirls for the trees. For wreaths, pipe rings in a circular pattern.
  4. Transfer the baking sheets to the preheated oven and allow the meringues to bake for about 1½ to 2 hours. Once they’re dry, turn off the oven and keep the meringues inside to cool completely.
  5. After the meringues have cooled, sprinkle on your holiday decorations while they are still slightly tacky from the moisture.

Notes

Make sure that your mixing bowl and beaters are completely grease-free. Store the meringues in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain their crispiness.
