Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 4 large egg whites, room temp
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • Edible glitter or sprinkles, for decorating
  • Sugar cookies or biscuit bases (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°F (93°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine egg whites and cream of tartar, then whip until soft peaks form. Gradually add sugar until stiff peaks are achieved. Fold in vanilla and food coloring.
  3. Pipe the meringue into tree shapes on the baking sheet.
  4. Decorate with edible glitter or sprinkles.
  5. Bake for 1½ to 2 hours until dry and crisp. Keep the oven door slightly ajar to cool.
  6. If desired, secure each tree to a cookie base with melted chocolate or icing.
  7. Serve or pack them as gifts.
