  5. Mix in boiling water and black food coloring until smooth.
  6. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
  8. Prepare frosting and assemble the cake, layering with blackberry preserves.
