Description
A heartwarming dessert that captures the flavors of fall with tender apples and a flaky topping.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thin
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- 1 cup whole milk, cold
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon turbinado or coarse sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). While it warms, carefully peel, core, and thinly slice the Granny Smith apples. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss these ingredients together until the apples are well-coated.
- Transfer the apple mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Ensure the apples are evenly spread out.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the remaining 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt for the topping. Cut the chilled butter into the dry mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the cold milk and vanilla extract to your dry mixture. Carefully stir until just combined.
- Using a spoon, drop dollops of the topping over the apple mixture, leaving some gaps. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until golden brown.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for about 15 minutes before serving warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
Ensure your butter is chilled for a flaky texture. Adjust sugar levels based on apple sweetness.
