Ingredients
Scale
- 8 oz flank steak, thinly sliced
- 8 oz large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 8 oz lo mein noodles
- 1 cup baby bok choy, chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
- 0.5 cup sliced carrots (optional)
- 2 green onions, chopped
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tsp rice vinegar
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 0.5 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- Toasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)
- Extra green onions (optional garnish)
- Lime wedges (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Begin by marinating the steak and shrimp in separate bowls. Combine equal parts soy sauce and sesame oil with minced garlic in each bowl, giving the proteins a strong flavor foundation. Allow them to sit for at least 15–30 minutes as this amplifies the taste, making each bite more delicious.
- Once your proteins are marinated, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add in the lo mein noodles and cook according to the package instructions—but reduce the cook time by one minute to ensure a perfect texture. Once done, drain and rinse the noodles with cold water to stop the cooking process. This step guarantees the noodles maintain their firmness in the stir-fry.
- In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar, rice vinegar, and minced garlic. Add crushed red pepper flakes for that optional heat, and thicken the mixture by adding a slurry made of cornstarch mixed with water. This blend will provide a sticky glaze that binds everything together in the stir-fry.
- Heat a tablespoon of vegetable oil in your preheated wok or skillet. Add the steak and sear each side for 1–2 minutes until it’s beautifully brown. Remember to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan; remove the steak and set it aside once cooked for a tender finish.
- In the same hot wok, add the shrimp and sear them until they turn pink and opaque, which usually takes about 2–3 minutes. Just like with the steak, ensure the shrimp cook quickly to avoid becoming tough.
- Add the remaining vegetable oil into the wok, then toss in your chopped bok choy, sliced red bell pepper, spinach, and optional carrots. Stir-fry these vibrant vegetables for 2–3 minutes until they’re tender yet still crunchy. This adds not just flavor but also color to your dish.
- Now it’s time to bring everything together! Add the cooked noodles along with the seared steak and shrimp back into the wok. Pour in the prepared stir-fry sauce and toss all the ingredients together over medium-high heat for 2–3 minutes until everything is well coated and heated through. The glossy look of the noodles and veggies will indicate that they’re ready to serve.
