Description

A delicious amish hamburger steak bake that combines meat and rich gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Begin your culinary journey by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, gather the ground beef, plain breadcrumbs, beaten egg, diced onion, salt, and black pepper. Use your hands to gently mix the ingredients until they are combined but avoid overworking the meat to keep the patties tender. With a light hand, form the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped hamburger patties. Let these beauties rest for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat until melted and bubbly. Carefully add the beef patties to the skillet, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Sear each patty for about 3 to 4 minutes until a rich, golden-brown crust forms. Once seared, carefully remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  3. Using the same skillet, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions to the skillet, sautéing them until they become tender and translucent (around 5 minutes). Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine, cooking for an additional 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the low-sodium beef broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Add the heavy cream and garlic powder, letting it all simmer until the sauce thickens slightly (about 5 minutes). Return the seared patties to the skillet, covering them with the gravy and covering the skillet with foil.
  4. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and allow it to bake for 45 minutes. Carefully remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Once done, remove the skillet from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

Notes

Ensure not to overcrowd your skillet while searing the patties to achieve a perfect crust.
