Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes

  • Author: Alioui

  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This classic recipe combines hearty ground beef simmered in a rich gravy, served over a bed of fluffy, buttery mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 cup peas and carrots (fresh or frozen)
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Start by peeling and quartering the potatoes. Place them in a large pot filled with salted water, and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the potatoes simmer for about 20 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. Drain the water from the pot, and return the potatoes to the hot pot to eliminate excess moisture. Using a potato masher, mash them until smooth and creamy, incorporating the butter and milk. Season with salt and pepper, and set aside to keep warm.
  2. In a large skillet, heat over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon until browned. After browning, drain any excess fat from the skillet, returning the beef to the heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent and fragrant. Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir for about two minutes to cook off the raw flour taste. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Follow with the Worcestershire sauce, bringing the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about five minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens. If you opt for the optional peas and carrots, stir them in at this stage and allow them to heat through. This entire step should take about 10–15 minutes.
  3. To plate, generously spoon the creamy mashed potatoes onto your serving plates, creating a nice base. Top each serving with the indulgent ground beef and gravy mixture, ensuring every bite has a good balance of potatoes and meat. If desired, sprinkle with fresh parsley for that pop of color and flavor.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, simply use gluten-free flour in lieu of regular flour when thickening the gravy. If you’re looking for a vegetarian version, replace the beef with plant-based meat alternatives and use vegetable broth instead of beef broth.
