Description

These Irresistible French Onion Sausage Rolls combine flaky pastry with a savory sausage filling and sweet caramelized onions for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500g ground sausage
  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup Gruyère cheese
  • 2 sheets puff pastry
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

  1. Begin by heating butter and olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add the sliced onions. Cook them slowly, allowing them to caramelize and develop a rich, golden-brown color. Patience is key here; let the onions do their thing for about 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent them from burning, ensuring an even caramelization. The sweetness of the onions will add a delightful depth of flavor to the rolls.
  2. Once the onions are caramelized, add minced garlic and fresh thyme to the pan. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant, then remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground sausage, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, the cooled onion mixture, and grated Gruyère cheese. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  4. On a lightly floured surface, take your puff pastry sheets and roll them out gently to increase the surface area. Cut the pastry into long strips, about 3 inches wide.
  5. Place a generous amount of the sausage filling along one edge of a pastry strip. Roll the pastry tightly over the filling, sealing the edges with your fingers.
  6. Beat the egg and milk together to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the rolls with this mixture and lightly score the top of each roll.
  7. Place your rolls on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 20 to 25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  8. After baking, let the rolls rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

These rolls can be frozen before or after baking. Make sure to wrap them tightly to prevent freezer burn.
